Physiotherapy (Musculoskeletal)

The Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Service provides assessment, diagnosis and treatment of adult musculoskeletal conditions in an out-patient environment. We use a number of treatment options including advice, joint and soft tissue mobilisations, exercises, acupuncture and injection therapy.

The service aims to manage patients within primary care although works closely together with the Adult Musculoskeletal Assessment and Management Service (AMAAMS) to ensure that those who require a specialist consultant opinion can be referred to secondary care.

Meet the team

Our team is more than 30 members strong and includes Advanced Musculoskeletal Practitioners, Clinical Specialists, Physiotherapists, Clinical Support Staff and Administrative Support Staff.

All our physiotherapists are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and are required to comply with the codes of practice and professional conduct guidelines as outlined by the HPC and our professional body, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.

How do I arrange an appointment?

Your GP or consultant can refer you into the service. A highly qualified physiotherapist from the AMAAMS team will look at your referral and depending on the information, will decide which service will be able to address your needs.

You will receive a letter from the service within 2 weeks to arrange an appointment at your preferred location at a mutually convenient time. If you have not heard from us after 2 weeks, please ring 01244 362998 and we will chase up the referral.

If we do not hear from you within 2 weeks of sending the letter, we will assume you no longer require physiotherapy and we will discharge you back to your GP.

What will happen at the first appointment?

At your first appointment we will normally check your details. Your physiotherapist will talk to you about your symptoms and may, with your consent, examine your posture, joints and muscles. Please bring a list with your current medication. Depending on the area to be assessed you may be asked to undress, so appropriate underwear, a sleeveless top or shorts may make you feel more comfortable.

You can expect to discuss the working diagnosis with your physiotherapist as well as the different treatment options. At the end of the consultation you should have agreed a treatment plan with your physiotherapist. You can expect to have been given some advice and exercises.

What do I do if I miss an appointment?

You need to ensure you attend your appointments. If you cannot attend a pre-agreed appointment, you will need to give us at least 24 hours’ notice.

If you miss your first appointment, you are automatically discharged back to your GP.

If you miss a follow-up appointment, you have 5 working days to ring us to make a new appointment. If you fail to attend a subsequent appointment, you will be discharged automatically.
