Willow Ward (Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit)

Willow Ward Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is an inpatient service in West Cheshire for individuals with serious mental health conditions admitted for assessment and treatment. It provides acute, inpatient support for service users with a wide range of backgrounds, including:

  • Adults with severe mental illness and high-risk behaviours
  • Mild to moderate learning disabilities in association with mental illness
  • Detained patients

Our carer pledge

‘We welcome carers onto our wards and embrace the vital contribution they make to achieving the best possible outcomes for patients. This is key to our person centred approach.’

The Team

Our psychiatric intensive care service is led by skilled clinicians and staff who provide tailored care pathways for individual service users and support for their families:

  • Consultant psychiatrists
  • Advance nurse practitioner
  • Nursing clinical leaders
  • Nurse therapists
  • Physical therapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Ward managers
  • Modern matrons

Therapies and support

Our aspirations are to ensure that individuals remain in PICU for the minimum amount of time required to meet their clinical needs. Following assessment, if an individual does require care in our service they will benefit from psychosocial and specialised nursing interventions.

When our clinical experts identify that a service user no longer requires the high level support of the PICU, they will be relocated into an appropriate less restrictive environment. Therapies and support include:

  • Specialist risk assessment using risk management aids such as CARSO and HCR 20
  • Pharmacotherapy
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Safe care
  • Occupational therapy
  • Motivational interviewing
  • Brief therapy solution-focused therapy
  • Physical health assessment
  • Smoking cessation
  • Nutritional assessment
  • Advocacy
  • Spiritual care
