Kellan is in tune with his 'Recovery'

A local NHS Trust is using the power of music to help mental health patients overcome their difficulties.

Kellan Morris, 24, from Crewe, is one of many patients who has benefitted from musical therapy at Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CWP).

Kellan’s musical therapy began at CWP’s Saddlebridge Recovery Centre, a low secure inpatient unit, and continued when he moved to Lime Walk House in Macclesfield. After testing his skills in a DJ group Kellan is now writing his own music as part of his rehabilitation programme.

Last month Kellan took to the studio to record his first ever track, written during his time at Saddlebridge in Nether Alderley and appropriately titled it ‘Recovery’. He said:

“The song is the story of my life so far. I had a tough start but I’ve come a long way thanks to support from friends and the staff at CWP.

“I really appreciate everybody’s help. It’s crucial to keep busy when you’re tackling mental health issues so the activities available here at CWP, like the music therapy, have made a big difference.”

In ‘Recovery’, Kellan, who lives with schizophrenia, raps: “Just because someone is mentally unwell doesn’t mean they are useless”.

He added: “I think a lot of people don’t know much about mental health when in fact it is very common.

“I’ve lost a lot of friends because they’ve been judgemental of my condition when they don’t really know the whole story.

“I hope that my music can help to tackle stigma around mental health.”

CWP Assistant Practitioner Alan Williams, who introduced Kellan to the musical therapy sessions at Saddlebridge Recovery Centre, was proud to sing on Kellan’s ‘Recovery’ track.

Alan said: “There are certain people in all walks of life who benefit greatly from the power of music. That’s no different for people with mental health difficulties and so we have introduced a range of musical therapy to help our patients.

“Through music we’ve been able to improve the health and wellbeing of many service users. Kellan is a prime example of how people can use music to overcome their difficulties.”
