Our volunteers play a valuable role in supporting nearly every area of our work, and they help out in a range of different roles in various locations all across Cheshire and Wirral.

Currently we have nearly 200 amazing people who volunteer with us regularly, in nearly 30 different volunteering roles. They give an enormous amount of their time and energy to us!

Here’s a few comments from our past and present volunteers:

“All the staff fully appreciate the work I do, and I am made to feel part of the team.”

“Since becoming a volunteer with CWP my confidence has grown and I have made a few friends along the way!”

Foundation course in Peer Support

Volunteers with lived experience who are interested in peer support are welcome to apply for the Foundation in Peer Support course.

The next course will start on June 18th and will be every Wednesday morning (10.00 – 12.30) for 4 weeks. (June 18th, 25th, July 2nd and 9th).

The course is intended for people with mental health lived experience who wish to improve their understanding of peer support and use their lived experience to support others as a volunteer. It will provide a sound foundation in the values and principles of peer support. Following the course you may wish to provide peer support as a volunteer with CWP or another organisation.

In addition to the virtual classroom there may also be some short pieces of additional homework tasks that will help to consolidate your learning and two additional information and support sessions for course participants, one before the course starts and one after the final session. The course is delivered by national leaders in peer support IMROC and is delivered virtually on zoom.

You can apply for a place on the course by emailing cwp.peersupport@nhs.net as soon as possible.

There may be more people interested in the course than places available, so please include in your email a little bit about yourself and your own mental health recovery journey, why you are interested in Peer Support and how think you would like to use what you learn on the course.

To participate in the course you will need access to a suitable lap top, computer or tablet and a quiet, private space that allows you to participate in group discussions without interruption.

If you have any questions about the course, please get in touch with Peer Support Lead, Paula Quigley paula.quigley2@nhs.net

If you are interested in volunteering with us, you can get in touch via email at cwp.volunteering@nhs.net or phone us on 01244 397 173.

When you first get in touch, please let us know answers to the following questions. This will assist us in finding a suitable volunteering role for you.

What are your goals for volunteering?

Knowing more about your motivations and expectations will assist us in finding a suitable opportunity for you. We also ask this because sometimes people contact us asking for volunteering opportunities, when they are actually looking for some work experience. These two options have very different application processes, so we want to ensure we are pointing you in the right direction.

What is your availability?

We ask our volunteers to commit to a minimum of six months with us to begin with. Are there any particular days or times that you would prefer to volunteer with us? We do also aim to be flexible in how we tailor our volunteering roles, so that we can accommodate each individual person’s needs.

What is your age?

Please note that you must be aged 18 or above to volunteer with us.

Where are you based?

Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is based at more than 60 different sites across the whole of Cheshire and the Wirral. We aim to identify suitable volunteering opportunities in areas close to where people are based.

Please note that we experience a high level of demand for volunteering opportunities at our Trust, and regretfully this means we cannot accommodate all volunteering requests that we receive. This could mean that at the present time we may not have a suitable volunteering opportunity available for you, but we will certainly do our best!

We are also unable to take on new volunteers without having both a clear Volunteer Role Description for you and a named member of staff who has capacity to supervise you. This is because it is vitally important to us that the volunteering experience is meaningful for our volunteers and also for our staff.
